Ischemia
Ischemia is
a condition where the walls of Coronary Arteries supplying blood
to the heart become clogged with fatty deposits, thus impeding
on the blood flow. The American Heart Association estimates
that 3 to 4 million Americans experience bouts of Silent Ischemia.
The artery becomes narrow and in
some cases can even be blocked for a short time, depriving the
heart from oxygen..
The risks
The narrowing of an artery which
impedes on the normal flow of the blood can become
such that a blockage then takes place. If Ischemia
lasts too long, it causes a heart attack ( myocardial infarction)
.
In most cases, Ischemia is followed by Chest Pain or Angina
so that patients know something is wrong. In some
cases, there is no pain associated with this condition which
is then called Silent Ischemia. |
