Heart Murmurs
Heart
Murmurs are the result of defective heart valves, with a smaller
than mormal opening which cannot open or close completely.
When this happens, regurgitation occurs which means that the blood
is leaked backward throught the valve.
Pregnancy, fever,
thyrotoxicosis (a diseased condition resulting from an overactive
thyroid gland) or anemia can also lead to heart murmurs.
There are two kinds of heart murmurs: Diastolic when the heart
muscle relaxes between beats and Systolic which are rated from
one to 6. Grade 6 Systolic Murmurs can be heard even when the
stethoscope is slightly removed from the chest.
The facts
Some heart murmurs are
hamless (they are called innocient heart murmurs). These
are comon in children and do not require treatment or lifestyle
changes. They tend to disappear at adulthood.
Other heart murmurs can
be more serious and indicative of a serious heart problem.
