Coronary Heart Disease
Coronary
heart disease is caused by the narrowing of the coronary arteries.
These are the arteries that feed the heart. The heart, like
any muscle needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients.
These are carried by the blood in the coronary arteries.
Coronary arteries can become narrowed
or clogged by cholesterol and fat deposit, a process known as
atherosclerosis.
When this happens, they can no longer deliver engough blood to
the heart which then causes coronary heart disease.
When not enough blood in feeding the heart chest pains (Angina)
can be experienced.
If the narrowing of the coronary arteries is so severe that blood
cannot reach the heart (in the case of a total blockage), the
result is a heart attack.
The causes.
- Increased age - more than 83 percent of the people who
die of coronary disease are 65 or older.
- Heredity - Children of parents with heart diesease are
more likely to develop the disease.
- Race - African Americans have move severe high blood
pressure than caucasians and are at greater risk.
Things you can do
- Stop smoking. Cigarette smoking is a powerful
independent risk factor for sudden cardian death in patients
with coronary disease.
- Lower your blood cholesterol
- Treat your high blood pressure - High blood pressure
increases the heart'w workload.
- Become more physically active
- Loose weight
